Paintless dent repair (PDR) works the dent out from behind the panel. I use steel tools and a PDR light to push the metal back, a little at a time, until the panel is flat. No sanding, no body filler, no repainting. Your factory paint stays on the car.

The damage: A Washington Park client's BMW X7 took a hit on the lower tailgate. The dent sat just below the main body line, a sharp impact with a deep crown and tight metal around it.

The problem: Inner tailgate bracing blocked the back of the panel, and the only access hole was nowhere near the dent. There was no easy path to push it out from behind.

The fix: Since this was a bigger repair, it was done by appointment rather than mobile. I removed the trim, then took the lower tailgate panel off the car and mounted it on a repair stand. I worked the dent out with small steel rods and a blending hammer under a PDR light, then put everything back together. No filler, no new paint, and the factory paint stayed on the car.

The result: The panel is smooth, and the car was done the same day.

• One close-up of the dent.
• One shot from an angle, so the dent shows in the reflection.
• Take them in shade or soft daylight. Bright sun can hide a dent.
